ServiceYear.org uses email to keep users informed of relevant updates and notifications. Below is more detailed information relating to alerts and notifications we send, including information on how to update your notification settings.

Verify your email address

In order to receive emails and off-site alerts from ServiceYear.org, you should verify your email address. Upon signing up, you should have received an email with a link to verify your address; however, if you cannot find that email, you can head to your dashboard and look for a green bar at the top of your screen. Once you locate that bar, click “verify your email,” and you’ll be able to send yourself a new verification email.

Emails for individuals interested in doing a service year

If you have verified your email address and are actively searching for a service year, you will receive occasional emails sharing info on how to apply to service years and where to find opportunities that may match your interests. You can opt out of these emails anytime by clicking “unsubscribe from our emails” at the bottom of any message.

Virtual Companion emails for currently serving corps members

If you are a currently serving corps member who was enrolled by your organization on ServiceYear.org, you will receive occasional emails (about once every two weeks) from the Virtual Companion. The Virtual Companion is an email series that is designed to deliver relevant advice and content based on where you are in your service year, and you can learn more about it by clicking here.

You can unsubscribe from the Virtual Companion anytime by clicking “unsubscribe from our emails” at the bottom of any message.

Alert emails

Some emails that ServiceYear.org sends are intended to alert you to important events that happened to your profile. If you are actively searching for a service year opportunity, these include alerts telling you that:

  • An organization recommended its listing to you

  • Someone sent you a message

  • A listing you saved has an application deadline that is approaching soon

If you are an organization user who is recruiting on ServiceYear.org, you will receive alerts telling you that:

  • A candidate applied to your listing

  • Someone sent you a message

  • Other important messages related to your organization's account

In addition to those real-time alerts, you will also receive a weekly digest that recaps the alerts you have received in the past week.

Since these messages are integral to the proper functioning of ServiceYear.org, there is no way to unsubscribe from them, except by choosing to deactivate your account. If you would like to deactivate your account, please send our team a message.

Newsletters and Other Emails

ServiceYear.org occasionally sends out newsletters and additional emails to our audiences. These include:

  • The Connector: A regular newsletter Service Year Alliance sends service year organization staff, state service commissions, and other interested individuals.

  • Corps member and alum emails: These are emails that go to all corps members and alums on ServiceYear.org featuring news, resources, and updates.

You can unsubscribe from any of these emails by clicking the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of the message.

Updating your preferences:

In addition to the emails mentioned above, your notifications will be impacted by the settings you select in your account preferences:

Here, you can set your profile to private, indicate if you are looking for service year opportunities, and update how and if you'd like to be able to message other corps members and alums. As mentioned above, even if you change your settings, you may still receive some system-generated emails related to account management, actions you have taken, and weekly activity. Please reach out to our team if you would like to deactivate your account and no longer receive these messages.
